Effie joi juomaansa ja odotti kärsivällisenä ruokaa ja kun Hunter esitti, Effien isoäidille kysymyksen, tämänkin uteliaisuus heräsi ja tämä vielä kysyi: "Niin mummi, oletko koskaan uskonut taikuuteen tai yliluonnollisiin asioihin?" Bertha katsoi hymyillen poikaa ja sitten tyttärentyttäreen. "Suoraan sanottuna, luulen että kaikilla on lapsuudessa ja nuoruudessa vaihe, että he uskovat tuollaisiin asioihin. Joillakin se kestää vain koko ikänsä", Bertha vastasi lempeällä äänellä. "Jos olen ihan rehellinen, niin ehkä se on terveellistä uskoakin sellaiseen, mutta ei pidä kuitenkaan liikaa uskoa", Bertha lisäsi pohtivasti, saaden ainakin Effien silmiin kipinää. "Koska kaikki on selitettävissä jollakin luonnollisella asialla", nainen lisäsi samalla, kun Effien ja hänen ruokansa tuotiin. "Minusta taikuus on luonnollista", Effie sanoi hieman närkästyneenä isoäitinsä viimeiseen kommenttiin.
