GENERAL
Until 1998, generally among witches and wizards werewolves were treated with strong prejudice and rejection. A werewolf had a lot of trouble in getting or holding a job, if his infection was revealed. So most werewolves lived away from normal society, in their own communities among their own kind. Thus werewolf students and teachers were extremely rare even in the tolerant Hogwarts.
Of course there were some "lone wolves" and those with a family, in the middle of normal society, it was by no means unheard of. But most of them would've desperately tried to hide their condition.
Though most of the wizardkind are prejudiced and afraid, there are exceptions to strengthen the rule. As in, not everyone is prejudiced – some think werewolves every bit as much human as before their infection and don't treat them differently. Examples of such exception are Albus Dumbledore, some people from the Ministry's Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures in general as the werewolves are being thrown between the Beast and Being sub-divisions, the people from the Werewolf Support Services in the same Department at the Ministry, the wizard who invented the Wolfsbane Potion and decided to have its recipe publicly available, and the people who granted him the Order of Merlin Award for inventing that potion.
After Voldemort's final defeat in 1998, the social status of werewolves got remarkably better. The society began to little by little see that all magical creatures - also werewolves - were equally dignified and just like anyone else. With the pure-blood prejudice most other prejudices began to lessen. They never completely died out, but it got easier for werewolves to co-exist with normal people.
- The curse can spread only by a bite from a werewolf in its full wolf form. A bite from one in its human form or only partially transformed, just gives a non-physical wolfish characteristic such as craving raw meat around full moon. Saliva alone doesn't spread anything - it needs to be a bite, a direct contact between a human and the demon. Animals can't get infected, so you're safe if you're in your animagus form.
- It's not possible to inherit the curse. (It just can't be known for sure.)
- The first transformation happens on the next full moon after the one you got bitten on.
- You can easily die before the first transformation, if the wound isn't cared for properly or if it's in a vital area of the body. A wound caused by a werewolf can't be healed by magic.
- Werewolves can't transform by the power of will, but only cause minor changes on the full moon evening. Everyone can't do that either. The full transformation happens only on a full moon night, and it's involuntary. It usually starts a little before midnight and everyone is in their full wolf form by midnight. Transformation back into the human form begins around six in the morning and is over in a few minutes.
- Transforming and holding it does not require direct moonlight, but it may make it happen faster.
- The transformation is always indescribably painful; as it slowly transforms the brain, bones, muscles/flesh and all internal organs - you can never completely get used to it, and in any other situation a human would die of shock under such degree of physical pain. The process may include heat rising from within, which can cause the need to strip naked.
In the morning the transformation back is equally painful, but the wolf falls into a coma-like sleep just before it - (where it spends the next few weeks) - so usually the person wakes up in his/her full human form. If under the effects of Wolfsbane Potion one may feel some pains through the sleep as the wolf isn't completely on the surface.
- It won't help to knock yourself out before the transformation into wolf form, as the pain is so intense you would wake from it. It can't be done even by magic because the number of such spells (or the strength of one in case of a child) needed for a werewolf to stay knocked out, would kill a human being.
- If you don't wish to hurt anyone, you might not want to lay unconscious in the wolf form too often - not even under the Wolfsbane Potion. The wolf yearns to be awake at least that one single night in a month, thus a total unconsciousness all the time would drive it mad. Even from two times in a row the wolf would begin to manifest its aggression in the human form outside full moon week, at which point drinking more Wolfsbane Potion is no use.
- There is no way to force a werewolf back into its human form on a full moon night.
- Its appearance can be nearly anything, as long as its details remain logical seeing to that it's a werewolf. As in no cross-breeds, hybrids or anything such but otherwise pretty much free hands. Here are some guideline:
It might be a classic werewolf, or look like a normal wolf, or be something in between. It doesn't matter what the one who bit him/her looked like, as the appearance essentially depends on the individual's genes and a little bit on how he/she feels about being a werewolf; if they hate it they may have a really ugly wolf form, and if they love or appreciate it they may look ?handsome?, or if feeling conflicted the appearance could be something in between. The details may even include some humane features like in the paws, ears or eyes, but no literal human parts.
The extreme and rough transformation twice a month does not leave marks on the human form body and thus does not make one age faster, as it is partially supernatural transformation. But as it is partially a biological sickness, it may have other individual affects on the body. In example, for my werewolf child the transformations and wolf hormones messed with his body so that his growth slowed down a lot for a few years and he hit puberty very late - that however is not common among werewolves, just my boy's body's reaction.
It may in a long run make the bones stronger and skin thicker, but so little at a time that even in a lifetime you wouldn't become unbreakable but just maybe less easily breakable than the average person. Of course a werewolf can look awful, if they've caused themselves deep scars in their wolf form, (wounds, even though heal unnaturally quickly in the wolf form, do leave scars to the human form) - and because some may become depressed or self-destructive.
- This is a new invention, it was brought to the public on 1. February 1980. Before that werewolves had no way to restrain the wolf as in the Wolfsbane herb on its own doesn't do a thing. The potion was invented by a potioner wizard Damocles. He received Fourth or higher honourable class in the Order of Merlin, for this invention. This potion is the only medical way to treat the symptoms of lycanthropy.
- The Wolfsbane Potion is extremely difficult and complex to brew, thus only the most skilled and advanced potioners can succeed in brewing it perfectly so that it's actually effective. Even the slightest mistake during the brewing renders it completely useless. This, for many werewolves, makes it difficult to receive.
- It needs be brewed every single night for one must drink it when it's fresh.
- Just completed Wolfsbane Potion sets off faint blue smoke and keeps on doing so.
- For all werewolves who drink it, it lets them retain their human mind and intelligence and thus also their ability to consider and control their actions, prevents the wolf's aggression and lessens the blood lust a lot. A werewolf under the effects of this potion can be dangerous, depending on his/her personality, attitudes and how much the blood lust was suppressed.
- It won't lessen the pain of transformation.
- It tastes indescribably disgusting. You must drink one full goblet of it every night during the week leading up to full moon the seventh night being the night of the full moon. If even one is skipped, or not fully consumed, or if anything is added to it it's rendered completely useless.
- At Hogwarts, professor Severus Snape is the only one who can brew this potion.
- in the human form at age 10+ and as an adult, stronger than average sexual desire and drawn to sexual energy. The onset and strength depends on the individual, but in any case it's at least somewhat stronger than the normal human being's.
- Heightened eye vision, hearing and sense of smell. The eye vision is mainly that of a human, but in addition have night vision and ability to spot even slight movements from far away. Some may have this all year round, but such individuals don't really notice it anymore after a while as to him/her they become as usual as normal senses to a normal human.
Wolfsbane Potion if taken every night as required, affects only the worst symptoms that is it lessens the blood lust and erases aggression. It may reduce other symptoms too, but not necessarily and never completely removes everything.
Reaction to the nearing full moon is completely individual. They may not fall ill during the week and may not have all the above symptoms. However, without the influence of Wolfsbane Potion everyone is at least somewhat aggressive and blood-lusting during that week.
Because of the symptoms and the extreme painfulness and horror of the transformation, a human can't stay sane if he/she gets bitten as a baby or close to infancy when their body and mind have barely begun to develop. How much it affect the psyche depends on the individual and if they're receiving Wolfsbane Potion or not. (A baby most likely would not be able to drink the disgusting potion in the amounts and times it's required in order to take effect.)
A werewolf recognises another in their human form, during the week leading up to full moon. It's sort of a sixth sense that causes deep sense of belonging/connection when in the company of another werewolf. Of course, recognize only if somehow learned that that's what it is about.
The human mind disappears completely, they no longer understand human speech or recognise their loved ones. They're replaced by a fierce, blood-lusting wolf. They have the intelligence of a normal wolf, (ie. are quick problem-solvers in a familiar environment, and organised & complex pack hunters), but nowhere near human intelligence. They are much more aggressive than normal wolves and they prefer preying humans, regardless if the human is wounded or not. It can be its own personality, but within these guidelines.
- While in their wolf form, they can't be killed by a regular bullet and it only weakens them a little. It can be killed only by cutting off its head, heart or any other vital body part or organ, or by striking silver into a vital spot, by drowning, or by the Killing Curse. Silver is poison to them, killing in a vital spot and elsewhere significantly weakening. It must be genuine, real silver. In their human form it doesn't affect them in any way, and they can be killed like any other human being. Also meaning that if it gets a normal bullet in its brain or other vital part and it's not removed before transformation back to human form – they can die or get seriously injured from it.
- In the wolf form all wounds heal unnaturally fast, and only silver prevents them from healing at all. But any severed or destroyed body part is forever lost, it can't grow them back. In the human form all wounds heal as normal to any human being.
- The stupefying curse does render them unconscious, but not just anybody succeeds in it because it needs to be really strong if used against a young wolf (that is a child or teen.) And an older wolf requires several strong ones hitting it at the same time. This is only in the wolf form, in human form they can be stupefied like any other human being and trying to cast too strong or multiple strong ones can kill.
- If dying in their wolf form, they immediately transform back to their human form.
There's only one working cure, but it's not known. This is in no way part of any official Harry Potter lore but completely made up by me for this RPG's universe.
A person who genuinely loves the werewolf in question, addresses him/her with their given birth name and only the first name.
* This person must be their blood relative and not a werewolf themselves.
* The werewolf must be in the full wolf form just moments before the involuntary transformation back to human form. The transformation still happens within the norm of the individual, not a moment earlier.
* The wolf must be under the influence of Wolfsbane Potion.
* It must be a night of Supermoon. (A full moon that seems bigger and brighter than usual because it's 90%, ((or in the case of an extreme Supermoon, 100% or more)) closer to Earth than its average distance during a year.) There are from 1 to 3 of these full moons in a year.
~ When all of those pieces fall in place together, the werewolf gets chased away forever or until the person gets another bite.
~ The key elements are; love, blood relative untainted by the curse, the name given around the time of human birth, exactly right and specific moment of the night nearing the return to human form, a night of Supermoon which makes the wolf inside extra sensitive/impressionable, and having it restrained by the Wolfsbane Potion which not only makes it weaker in the right sense but also contributes against the physical aspect of the curse.
~ All of this put together treats the curse thoroughly and effectively, it being a combination of magical/spiritual and biological/physical condition. The first and most important key element is an act of love from someone, an act that strongly relates to being human and wanting the person to be okay. Because in the Harry Potter canon love acted in that manner is ancient magic that can protect a person even from something as evil and strong as the Killing Curse. But I visioned a werewolf cure to be more complex because so is the condition in comparison to a Killing Curse.
~ However, this cure leaves the world in the situation that there is no known cure for werewolf infection. Even the cured individual. After all, most of those elements surely have come and gone many times before without any effect during the years, as never before they happened all at once. And seeing to the amount and specific nature of required elements, it is extremely rare to get cured this way. But even with it being highly unlikely it is entirely possible, what with everything in the Harry Potter universe being pre-set to happen by some higher power. As evident from the fact that Harry was able to save his own life during a time travel. (As in, people in the Potter universe apparently have only an illusion of free will. Which is of course still free will nonetheless.)
It's rare.
First of all, this has been possible only since the invention of Wolfsbane Potion, that is since the year 1980. And most werewolves prefer the company of other werewolves or get away from their families for the duration of the full moon night, especially if they can't have Wolfsbane Potion. Some may not have blood relatives in their life very often if at all.
Someone may have changed their birth name to something else or be usually called by a nickname. Time-vice the chance occurs only from one to three times a year, for a short moment. The likeliness of all the elements falling in place at the same time is not high. Yet possible, depending on the life situation and luck. It should take at least numerous years before this could happen, if ever.
So you can create a werewolf character who gets cured, but not just any kind. However, for many kinds of people you can through game events or otherwise later develop new life situations, relatives and so on which eventually make this cure possible. The main thing is that the story remains logic and realistic. Note! Because the chance of a cure has so recently opened up, and must be rare, I can not accept endless number of cured werewolves into this game. Or that too many would be cured during the same decade. Please be considerate if you create and develop such character.
It's unknown.
An ancient German myth claims that a werewolf can be cured if the person is called by their full birth name once or thrice while in the wolf form in all its simplicity and safety it's probably one of the first cures people try, any time and by whoever. But as it doesn't work, the use of a name is ruled out as a cure. Especially as nothing else claimed by myths works either.
Someone living with a family member likely gets called by their birth name countless times in everyday life, so if it happens conveniently to form a cure it probably isn't thought of as seemingly nothing new happened.
The moon is also difficult to link to this as a Supermoon is not visible to the naked eye the difference in the size and brightness is so small. It's usually noticed only if already knowing that it's such a night.
If you want a werewolf character who gets cured at some point, choose a Supermoon night from here.
- In human ears a werewolf's "speaking" sounds like a normal wolf, but all werewolves under the influence of Wolfsbane Potion hear each others' speech as if they were speaking human words. Though howling is always just howling.
- Without the influence of Wolfsbane Potion, a werewolf answers only to a call of its own kind – to another werewolf. A werewolf's howl has a deeply inhumane and blood-lusting tone even when it's not hungry.
- In a wolf form they can't reproduce with any creature – not even with another werewolf. In their human form they can reproduce normally with humans and werewolves in human form.
Can be muggles or magical. Even though prejudice towards werewolves is strong, the official view of them is in constant conflict and keeps changing while hunting could easily cause casualties - thus hunting werewolves is illegal also in the wizarding society. Punishable by an Azkaban sentence.
NOTE! Before the 1970's there was never a werewolf in Hogwarts, during the '70's Remus was the only one and again in the '80s there were none. Because it wasn't until the tolerant Dumbledore became the Headmaster that a werewolf was let in, (Remus) who was arranged the Whooping Willow and Shrieking Shack for the full moon nights. And in the HP universe werewolves strongly in the normal society were extremely rare because of the prejudice. See the General section.
Thus, as there already is one in Hogwarts for the early '90s...You can have a werewolf character in Hogwarts but not before the Second Wizarding War (1996-1998) when Greyback's pack infected more people or in the 2000's when the general prejudice was less.
The whole staff knows about another staff member's werewolf infection, as they are responsible for other people's children. Students are not told about a staff member's or a student's condition.
A student's condition is revealed only to those staff members it concerns.
Those are:
- the Headmaster
- the healer Poppy Pomfrey
- the student's Head of House
- the Potions Master (who brews the Wolfsbane Potion)
One of the above brings the potion to the students and makes sure they drink it all. Any other staff member is informed only on need-to-know bases.
- There were no werewolves in Hogwarts between Remus Lupin and the 1990's but if there had been they would've used the Whooping Willow and the Shrieking Shack like Remus did.
- From September 1991 this system takes effect.
Registering as any other student, but in addition sending a personal letter to the Headmaster telling that the child is a werewolf. If you so desire, you can request a meeting. You must do that and meet with the Headmaster before school year starts, if there's something unusual about the child's werewolf condition - especially if it's potentially life-threatening. If all problems can be solved, you can register the child during that meeting. (This must happen by July 31st.)
Dumbledore has died and Hogwarts is run by Death Eaters, as is the Ministry of Magic. Any werewolf in Hogwarts student age, should avoid attending at all costs unless they want to be a bad guy. Also remembering that during the Death Eater attack in June 1997, professor Snape leaves the school, as in that month there is no one at the school to provide them with Wolfsbane Potion.
According to Remus Lupin, Fenrir Greyback is the wildest and most brutal werewolf alive (in 1996.) By that year Fenrir indeed was so much into the taste of human flesh and out of his mind that he could bite, eat and kill like a wolf even in his human form. His aim is to infect as many people as possible, in efforts to gather large enough pack to take over the wizarding society instead of it being run by normal wizards and witches. This is why he loves biting little children, and then try to abduct them to raise as his own in his community, far away from their real parents and to hate normal witches and wizards.
The pack is mainly formed by children Fenrir has bitten, abducted and raised (some already adults) and by werewolves bitten by others but recruited by him. Any and all werewolves are initially a potential member, but the pack can be joined only with Fenrir's permission after personally meeting him. The community was founded probably some time in the 1960's - (the specific year can be announced if Greyback ever has a player who decides it.) During 1991-1994 the pack included approximately 200 werewolves, and during the Second Wizarding War (1995-1998) it doubled. They're children, teens and adults.
No one of them is a Death Eater or even allowed to join Voldemort's followers. During the First Wizarding War (1970-1981) the pack did not ally with Voldemort but was only on it's own side. During the Second Wizarding War (1995-1998) Fenrir allied his pack with Voldemort after the man promised him more victims (and possibly for other reasons, if Fenrir's player so desires) – but still no one joined Death Eaters, they simply allied with them and Fenrir remained the pack leader. Even though all of them were considered Voldemort's allies during the war, it doesn't mean all of them wanted to be. Loyalty to Greyback is likely the first and most important requirement in order to join this pack, so it or lack of it would influence an individual's choices.
The Ministry of Magic attempts to keep a registers of all werewolves living in Great-Britain. It was first opened on 1. January 1947. It's located at the Department of Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. For years it was thrown around between the Beast division and Being division - but currently it is in the Beast division.
In the mid 1960's the Registers wasn't kept very carefully, as the werewolf Fenrir Greyback managed to keep his secret even when he was literally brought to the Ministry and questioned about the deaths of two muggle children in 1964.
- If searched by the Capture Unit or not (as in, if believed to be dangerous or not)
- Full name
- Birth date
- Clear photo or detailed description of both the human and wolf forms.
(If this happened in childhood or teenage years, this should be updated when the person is in their twenties.)
- Home address
(must be kept up-to-date)
- Occupation and the workplace
(must be kept up-to-date)
All werewolves are required to register, but the Registers isn't very useful as very few actually do. Most werewolves wish to avoid the shame and rejection and the personal safety issues that would follow the revelation.
Of course the Registers is not publicly available and those who have access to it are required by law to not reveal any information from it, but usually a werewolf wouldn't want to reveal their condition to anyone who doesn't need to know.
Thus the Registers includes only a minor fraction of the werewolves living in Great-Britain;
- those who want to try and express their sincere harmlessness when applying for or getting a certain type of a job such as a healer, teacher or any job where they'd work with children. This of course creates numerous risks, but the bravest may try.
- those whose condition has been revealed to the Ministry officials by accident and thus registered against their will. (The vast majority ends up in the Registers this way.)
- members of the Werewolf Registers Council
- members of the Werewolf Capture Unit *
- Aurors
- Witches and wizards working for the muggle law enforcement (the police)
~ They are required to keep the personal information secret. Not allowed to reveal even to other authorities without permission from the Council. The only exception is if revealing is absolutely necessary in order to protect someone from getting infected or killed.
~ They are required to inform the Council if they know of a werewolf who is likely to hurt other people.
~ Aurors, and witches/wizards from the muggle police, can't just walk in and study the Registers for whatever reason. They must tell their name, show a document that proves they're an auror or a police constable, and state a reason why they need to see the Registers, (the reason should somehow relate to their job.) They are supervised by a member of the Council while reading the Registers.
~ All permitted reads should be marked; who read, and when. No matter who it was.
Very few magical people are employed by the muggle police services, and even of them some may choose to solve only muggle crimes and not have anything to do with the wizarding kind. But some may want to help, while the Ministry uses all available support to uphold the secrecy of magic, and prevention and solving of crimes involving magic and magical creatures.
- If you can prove that you've protected people from the wolf to the best of your ability, the only consequence is getting registered against your will.
- If you have hurt someone in wolf form and you can prove it was an accident, then in addition to getting registered you are put under especially active supervision for some time. The style and duration is case-sensitive.
- If you have hurt someone on purpose in your wolf form or recklessly risked it, then in addition to getting registered you're sentenced to Azkaban for some time – and if ever freed, you're under strict supervision for the rest of your life. The duration of the sentences is case-sensitive. !! Exception: If the crime is/was committed as a child, you are not sent to Azkaban but only put under strict supervision for life.
~ If an officer who has access to the Registers gives out any personal information from it to anyone without permission from the Council, they are fined 250 Galleons or 1250£ (which on the timeline of 1980-1992 is the equivalent of 5000-2500£ or even more in today's money, as in a huge amount of money.) The fine can be even higher, depending on how wealthy the offender is.
~ If an officer who has access to the Registers doesn't report a potentially dangerous werewolf, depending on the case they may receive the fine or be sentenced to Azkaban for some time. But if the werewolf in question is their family member, Azkaban is not an option for in such case protecting is understandable.
~ Anyone who doesn't have access to the Registers is not required to report a werewolf. But if you're protecting a certainly dangerous werewolf, you could receive one of the mentioned punishments. Again, if the wolf in question is a family member, Azkaban is not an option.
- If a muggle werewolf is revealed, he/she will be marked in the Registers.
- If the person is good, they are offered help - what kind depends on if the Ministry sees it safe to reveal the existence of magic or not. If yes, the muggle is provided with Wolfsbane Potion. If not, the help is given in secret by involving a witch or a wizard in the muggle's life.
The help is given by the Werewolf Support Services. *
- If the muggle has hurt someone on purpose or recklessly risked it, they are introduced to the wizarding society by bringing them to the Ministry and being sentenced to Azkaban for some time. If ever freed, and if necessary some memory charms may be applied.
* Werewolf Capture Unit is in the same department and division as the Registry. The task of this unit is to track and capture werewolves who are considered a danger to other humans.
* Werewolf Support Service is in the same department but unlike those others, this is located at the Being division. Founded in January 1975.
Here are the full moons rising during the set timeline.
If you need an earlier or later full moon date, you can find them from here.
!! Note, that in some months full moon occurs twice! !! Note, that the full moon occurs between the marked day and its previous day.
In example; if the full moon is marked on 2nd of January, the last Wolfsbane Potion must be taken on 1st of January – as the transformation happens at midnight between the 1st and 2nd
