SPELLS & POTIONS

NOTE!
If you want to create an original spell/curse/charm or potion
remember to first check the list of what magic can't do,
from the Magic section of our lore.

NOTE!
* Below in this thread is specific info on the Patronus Charm and especially the Fidelius Charm for this RPG's universe!

--> POTIONS

NOTE!

* Potion brewing does not require use of a wand at any point. Still, it does require magical power, intent and incantations in order for a potion to have any chance of success.

PATRONUS CHARM - (Expecto Patronum)

Creates a silvery energy field that protects against dementors and lethifolds. A perfectly formed, corporal Patronus chases them away. A weak Patronus is silvery mist that only slows them down and lasts for a short time. Perfectly formed Patronus takes an animal shape and is solid, strong protector that moves and lasts until its task is done.

The animal shape depends on the caster, whichever animal is somehow deeply meaningful to him/her and/or resembles their personality traits. It can be one and same through life, but can change because of deep emotional changes the person experiences. In example Snape's Patronus was a doe all along – the same as Lily Potter's whom he deeply loved until his death. But Nymphadora Tonks' Patronus form changed from the original into a werewolf, when she was depressed because of the werewolf Remus Lupin whom she loved.

Casting this requires thinking of a deep and pure happy memory and completely surrendering to it, and strong ability to control your mind and emotions. This is why children and teens can't cast a perfect Patronus, as it's usually needed in desperate and dangerous situations. Not all adults can either. Also the person's strength in magic in general affect their ability to successfully produce a Patronus. At Hogwarts they start to teach this on the sixth year.

FIDELIUS CHARM - (Incantation unknown)

Note! This is not official vision, but mine based on the details given in the books!

A protection spell that can effectively hide objects and places, such as a house. It's location is sealed inside one specific person who thus becomes the Secret Keeper. This charm is extremely complicated and complex, and puts certain people in danger so usually this is not used unless absolutely necessary.

So this isn't directly protecting anything, but thorough the KNOWLEDGE about it.

When this charm is in effect, the hidden thing can be found only by those who were there at the time of the casting, by the Secret Keeper and by anyone who he/she has later told about it. Anyone else looking for the object/place may stand right next to it without seeing or knowing it in any way. Even if you knew its location prior to this charm, you can't find it after it took effect – even on the area you won't recognise it. It can't be found even accidentally.

The protected object or place does not become invisible or anything, just simply impossible to find.

In example the Order of the Phoenix's Headquarters at Grimmauld Place 12 was never downright invisible, it just looked like number 13 came after 11 – to those who didn't know about the 12.

You can't find an object/place hidden with this, by following someone who knows. As in, though many people may know about it only the Secret Keeper can reveal the location and it can't be forced out of him/her. They have to reveal it either by speaking or writing. It also has to happen directly between the Secret Keeper and the person to whom it'll be revealed, and be very specifically phrased.

In example, Albus Dumbledore was the Secret Keeper of the Order's Headquarters. He wrote Harry a note that said "The Order of the Phoenix's Headquarters is located on 12 Grimmauld Place, London." After reading it, Harry was able to see it and access it. If the note had only stated the address, it wouldn't have worked – as the charm was specifically protecting the Order's Headquarters and not just the house itself.

Even though the note was handed to Harry by Alastor Moody, Dumbledore had written it out of his own free will and meant it for Harry.

Those to whom the Secret Keeper has revealed the information can find the place but not spread the secret themselves. They can start doing that only after the original Secret Keeper dies, which is when all of those people become the Secret Keepers. The information can be forced out of these ”secondary” Secret Keepers. But still it has to be conscious revelation as in you can't just follow them from afar.

If the original Secret Keeper dies before revealing the secret to anyone, it dies with them and the charm lasts until eventually wears off on its own.

You can't protect a person with this charm, but only his/her location.

In example Lily, James and Harry Potter's house and property was protected with this charm when they were hiding from Voldemort. Before Wormtail (the Secret Keeper) revealed the location to Voldemort, the man could've walked past their house or even on their yard and seen the family play there, without realising it and would've just walked away without any idea what just happened. But whenever moving outside that property the Potters were completely visible and able to be found just like anyone else.

Those to whom Wormtail had revealed the secret could find the house and while in it or on its property they too were protected by the charm even though it wasn't cast specifically

Of course you can't receive mail to a house like this, not owl post or muggle mail. It has to be redirected somewhere else.

Between August 1997 and May 1998 an area or house protected with this charm was the only place where you could speak Voldemort's name without him or the Death Eaters finding you. But as the Taboo curse was not commonly known about, it's unlikely anyone used this unless they were literally fighting against the bad guys and might have used this kind of protection anyway.

This charm can be lifted when it's no longer needed, but it requires all the same people who were there when it was cast and needs to be done from within the area.

Otherwise, this lifts itself when there's no longer a secret to be kept.

In example;

When the Order's Headquarters was moved from the 12 Grimmauld Place to The Burrow this charm on the Grimmauld Place automatically lifter and it became visible to anyone, including muggles. A new Fidelius Charm was cast on The Burrow.

When James and Lily Potter died and Harry's official residence became the Dursley's house, the Fidelius Charm on their hiding place lifted automatically as there was no longer a secret to keep. But, because it was partially blown up and wanted as a memorial for the Potter family it was made invisible to muggles. So after the war only witches and wizards could see an access the property and house.

The larger the area to be protected, the harder it is to cast this charm and the risk of an enemy lurking around increases, so the area is usually kept as small as possible.

This is extremely complex and deep charm especially as it relates to storing a secret into another person's soul...So there are very, very few who could successfully pull this off. It is highly unlikely that any teenager could cast this, or even most adults. Also the wand being used needs to have certain characteristics, ie. be especially strong in protective spells.
